Hi all,
We’ve been experimenting with pricing in Boxing Beta to make the trading pillar of the game more fun, and we plan to continue to do that. We’ve noticed that a lot of players weren’t able to show off their achievements in game. Since only a small proportion of players get super into ranked (not everyone wants to sweat), we wanted to make sure that there were alternative progression tracks that people could take.
With that in mind, here’s what we’ve changed.
We’ve renamed our rarity and gloves to be similar to the ranked system. We picked different icons (after some debate internally), to make sure that there’s no confusion, but that people know which gloves are valuable.
Additionally, we’ve changed the icons and look around the gloves to be clear about this.
We’ve added particle effects to gloves because they’re cool. In the past, we were worried about authenticity - a core pillar of Boxing Beta. However, we feel that we shouldn’t ignore that this is a game, and that representation is different than being authentic. With that in mind, we have standardized particles for different rarities. This should allow you to immediately know to some level what rarity a glove is in Boxing Beta.
In order to support our authenticity pillar for tournaments and other areas within Boxing Beta, we’ve added a “Glove effects” setting which will turn off the particle effects on the gloves.
We thought that you were getting way too little for the time and energy it took to earn crates. We’ve standardized our pricing to be better (and this is still subject to change), where you should not have to play very long to get a glove you love.
This should also let you gain enough trading material such that playing matches AFTER finding a glove you love is still interesting and fun.
In order to try to sell more gems, we’ve set prices for gems at a consistent rate. That way, you can earn certain gloves no matter how you play, but other gloves will keep on being premium.
Trading now shows rarities next to people’s names, and how much of each stock they have. This should let you quickly find people who may have the glove that you want.
One issue I had with trading is I had no idea what I was trading and if it was valuable. By making these adjustments, I think with the new quality levels it’s much easier to see why a certain glove is quality.
We’ve fixed a few things in the trading hub. For one, this UI was broken showing recent trades, and so we fixed this. We also now show when a rare glove is earned!
Overall, we hope to see more players with more player expression, and a more vibrant community. Thank you for all the feedback, and for being such a great community. We hope to not just focus on trading as a studio, but we realized this was a really unfun part of the game, and also we actually need to make money, so we’re thinking a lot about how this system works.
Until later, Studio Koi Koi
